Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is the Breeders Legal Defense Fund??
A: The Breeders Legal Defense Fund is a non-profit organization that was established by a group of concerned pet industry professionals in the Midwest for one purpose only – to defend professional dog breeders.
?Q: Who are the founders of the Breeders Legal Defense Fund??
A: The founders include veterinarians, breeders, state breeder associations, pet distributors, pet retailers and other industry partners who are dedicated to fighting for breeders throughout the United States.
Q: What are the funds used for??
A: The fund is being used exclusively to defend legitimate, quality-conscious breeders who are dedicated to the highest standards of animal husbandry and quality care. The purpose of the organization, and the fund, is very simple: to win the legal battles necessary to protect and defend professional breeders from those who desire to put them out of business.
Q: Who controls the funds??
A: The control of the funds rests with the Governing Board (board members) who confer routinely with the Advisory Board (board members) in order to make decisions about where the funds will most effectively protect and defend professional breeders.
Q: Are there any specific law suits currently underway??
A: Yes. A lawsuit has been filed to prevent USDA/APHIS from releasing confidential personal and business information of breeders to the Humane Society of the United States. Had this suit not been filed, or if it were dropped, then that private information on all Missouri breeders would be handed over to USDA/APHIS, which would establish a precedent for all other states.
Q: Where does that lawsuit currently stand??
A: A temporary stay has been issued which keeps the information from being released until the lawsuit resolves the issue, which will be extremely expensive and highlights the need for this important industry-supported fund.
Q: Why is the fund address in Washington DC??
A: Two reasons, really. First, that is the location of the law firm who filed to prevent USDA from releasing confidential personal and business information of breeders to the Humane Society of the United States. Second, in order to raise the funds necessary to most effectively defend breeders across the United States, it is important to have a national presence.
Q: Are donations to the Breeders Legal Defense Fund tax deductible??
A: We are seeking this designation but at this time they are not.
Q: Are any of the funds raised used for legislative or political purposes??
A: No. The funds are used exclusively in legal defense of breeders. The Breeders Legal Defense Fund is not a political organization, nor does it contribute any money to political parties, candidates, PACs or organizations. 100% of the proceeds raised by the Breeders Legal Defense Fund is used for legal battles that protect and defend professional breeders.
Q: How can someone donate to the fund??
A: There are two primary methods which are being used to raise funds. The first is a check-off system whereby pet retailers, distributors and breeders will be checking off a donation per puppy transaction. The second is through direct donations to the fund by others in the pet industry, such as manufacturers, veterinarians, vet clinics, rescue groups, groomers and individual concerned citizens.
